Lambeth Wellbeing Fund open now (until 21.10.16)

Does your community group run projects that help people improve their health and wellbeing? The London Community Foundation has a new grant fund to support local projects – here’s the details:

Lambeth Wellbeing fund

Small grants funding available for local projects to help people improve their health and wellbeing.  We know that people who have good social connections are healthier and better able to deal with health problems if they arise, including managing long-term health conditions.   If you have an idea for a project why not apply for a grant. We are particularly interested in projects which reach the most isolated people in the community who don’t currently access any other activities

Projects must support participants to address at least one of the following:

  • Being able to manage their own health and wellbeing (or condition) and being supported to do so. This also includes having access to the right information and support, and being able to stay healthy;
  • Being able to have the right things in place to help them to avoid a crisis, or to limit the impact of a crisis, particularly for people who are living independently;
  • Feeling that they are part of a community.

Grants of up to £5,000 are available for projects which:

  1. Are based in Vassall, Coldharbour, Stockwell, Ferndale and Larkhall wards
  2. Are based in other neighbourhoods in Lambeth

Grants of up to £10,000 are available for projects which support tenants of Helmi House, Hillyard House and Lingham Court extra care facilities.

Deadline for applications: 5pm on Friday 21st October 2016

For more information on the Fund and how to apply contact  Donna Yay at the London Community Foundation   email donna.yay@londoncf.org.uk  Tel 020 7582 5117

Stockwell Ward Panel 12th October 6.30pm Stockwell Community Resource Centre

Message from Sergeant Howers:

On Wednesday 12th October the Stockwell Ward Panel is meeting at the Stockwell Community Resource Centre on Studley Road at 6.30pm. This panel sets the policing promises for the ward for the next three months. We are keen to encourage participation in this panel as it allows us to build a more accurate picture of problems within the ward so that we can better target them with our resources.

If you are able to attend the panel this Wednesday it would be much appreciated, but if not, please send me any concerns you may have and I will raise them as a discussion point at the meeting.

Kind regards,

Simon

Working with local GPs to support the Portuguese community

We’re currently supporting one of our local GPs to reach out at an earlier stage to Portuguese speakers who might be at risk of diabetes and other illnesses. We’ll be supporting some pilot projects soon – e.g. a breakfast homework club for school children in a local cafe, where we also work to support their parents. Check out the clip below, which went out on Portuguese lunchtime news and was filmed in our offices (and which feature Gustavo in a non-speaking part!):

We want the local community to get involved – it’s YOUR festival! Please get in touch if you would like to volunteer, perform, share information, have a stall or suggest something for the festival.

We are very pleased to have Lambeth Early Action Partnership (LEAP) supporting an early years section of the event, providing lots of activities and information for little ones and their parents ‘from conception to reception’.

Community Connectors

Community Connectors are local residents, who link others in their local community with activities and organisations that can help improve their quality of life. This can include linking people up with wellbeing and health services, local community groups and organisations, social groups and activities that can have a positive impact on their life.

Community Connectors are given training and support to give them the skills needed to be able to talk to people about wellbeing, the things that they can do for themselves, and places to go to access help and support doing this.

This ability to link people with services, and services with people will help create connections that could provide a safety net of social support to help people feel better about their wellbeing and where they live.

The next training course starts on 17th May. For more information see

Over 400 people attended ‘Ksiazkowisko’, our Polish poetry festival held as part of the Lambeth Readers and Writers Festival with Streatham Library last weekend! Our Poles Connect steering group and other Polish Lambeth based groups came together to showcase poetry written by local Polish children alongside the work of established Polish poets. The event was opened by former Mayor Saleha Jaffer and Jolanta Grzelczyk from the Polish Consulate in London. The event was supported by the London Community Foundation. The Polish community in Lambeth was also celebrating Polish Heritage Day – a new initiative by the Polish Embassy UK in London to celebrate openness, appreciation, and better understanding between the Polish community and the wider British society.
