Job opportunity with Stockwell Partnership

Stockwell Partnership has been supporting a ‘Hug’ Group of local, mainly older, Portuguese speakers for 6 years, organising activities and visits. Thanks to the support of the London Community Foundation, we are now seeking a self-employed individual to co-ordinate the group for 4 hours a week, for a 1-year fixed term contract. Rate: £20 per hour.

The ideal candidate will speak and write fluent Portuguese and English, be motivated, eager to learn, with good organisational skills

Stockwell Portuguese Community Project – Review

Our Stockwell Portuguese Community project has supported over 1000 local Portuguese residents over the past six years. Support has included advice, help into work, support with volunteering, and building links with the wider community (e.g. involving people in consultations and the Stockwell Forum).

Funded by BIG Lottery Reaching Communities, we are in the process of applying for a continuation grant. As part of this process we have had to commission an external evaluation of the project, which you can read by clicking on this link:

Next Stockwell Forum, including Lambeth Wellbeing Fund / Project Smith workshop

The next Stockwell Forum will take place on Wednesday September 13th at 6.30pm (note the earlier start time) at Bolney Meadow Community Centre, 31 Bolney St, London SW8 1EZ.

There will be a chance to update everyone about your own projects and events, and then the majority of the Forum will be given over to a workshop on the Lambeth Wellbeing Fund, enabling forum members to develop their own ideas for projects and bids.

As usual, free refreshments will be provided at the end. Here’s the agenda:

State of Stockwell Survey 2017

Many thanks to all those who completed our State of Stockwell Survey. The good news was that, overall, 44% of respondents felt Stockwell had improved over the last year, as opposed to 20% who thought it had got worse. The main reasons for the sense of improvement were the redesign of the gyratory and improvements to the Memorial Garden area (28% of respondents), and improvements to shops and new businesses (17%).

Of those who felt the area had got worse, the most negative comments were made about the cleanliness of the streets (11% of respondents).

We need your help!

Stockwell Festival 2018 has been selected as a project in the Tesco Bags for Help scheme. That means that during November and December you’ll be able to vote to support the Festival every time you shop at local Tesco stores.

Please vote for the Festival! You can also help by telling your friends and by posting support messages on Twitter and Facebook etc.

Background information on the Bags for Help Scheme:

Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of up to £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – all raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores – being awarded to local community projects.

Bags of Help offers community groups and projects across the UK a share of revenue generated from carrier bag sales in Tesco store. The public will now vote in store during November and December on who should receive the awards. For more information on Bags for Help see www.tesco.com/bagsofhelp

Lambeth PORTUGUESE COMMUNITY Wellbeing Partnership

St Martin’s Day, 11 November 2017 – celebration for the Portuguese Community

The Lambeth Portuguese Community Wellbeing Partnership, Lambeth Council and Lambeth NHS would like to invite you to a free event celebrating St Martin’s Day on 11 November between 2- 6pm at Reay Primary School Hackford Rd, London SW9 0EN.

Come and enjoy a fun day of community activities for all the family including traditional Portuguese Dancing and Folk singing, music, football, football for all ages, please wear trainers if you’d like to play films, Information stalls, relaxation and wellbeing classes. We’ll even have an NHS Doctor and health stall offering a free blood pressure and health check and to answer all your health questions!

FREE EVENT, FREE FOOD AND CHESTNUTS

Food is provided for free and in the spirit of St Martin, everyone who comes will enjoy a free bag of Chestnuts and a glass of wine (Agua-pé) /soft drinks. First come first serve.

Stockwell Forum – Weds Jan 31st, 7-8.30pm at Stockwell Community Centre

STOP PRESS – the date of the next Stockwell Forum has been confirmed. It will be on Weds 31st January, from 7 – 8.30pm in the Stockwell Centre (formerly Stockwell Community Resource Centre).

Morley College, who are now running the centre, will be giving an overview of their range of Adult Education courses. Other speakers include Dr Vikesh Sharma on the Lambeth Portuguese Community Wellbeing Partnership and Marta Sordyl on the Stockwell Parent Forum. And there is as always an open session for anyone to update on their own projects and events.

Plus free food and refreshments to finish.
